Understand your privacy choices

Vivaldi provides controls for cookies, website permissions, search suggestions and content blocking. Review these settings when you first use the browser, especially on a shared device.

Browser settings and website policies cover different things. Blocking some trackers does not prevent a site from recognizing an account you sign in to or information you submit.

Keep research pages together

On desktop, put reference pages in a Tab Stack, separate projects with Workspaces and tile two documents for comparison. Quick Commands helps you find open tabs and run browser actions. Large tab collections still depend on available memory.

Adjust the desktop layout

Choose a theme, edit supported toolbars and assign keyboard shortcuts. A compact layout can leave more room for reading, while side panels keep frequently used tools within reach. Available controls vary by platform.

Choose what to block and sync

Select a blocking level and review exceptions for individual sites. Sync is optional and encrypts selected browser data before upload. These features do not replace device security, account protection or the privacy policies of websites you visit.

Built-in tools for browsing and research

The tools below describe desktop features. Mobile availability, account requirements and settings differ.

Mail

Connect supported email accounts to the desktop Mail client and organize messages in one place.

Calendar

View and edit events in the desktop Calendar. Connecting an online calendar requires compatible service settings.

Feed reader

Subscribe to supported feeds in the desktop reader. Publishers determine the content available in each feed.

Side panels

Add a website to a desktop Web Panel and keep it beside the current page. Some sites need more space.

Notes

Save text and source links while browsing. Enable Notes in Sync to share supported data across devices.

Sync

Sign in and configure Sync to transfer selected data with end-to-end encryption.

Tab tiling

Tile selected desktop tabs for comparison. Readability depends on screen size and the number of pages.

Tab stacks

Group related pages into Tab Stacks. Grouping changes organization, not how much memory each page needs.

Workspaces

Organize desktop tabs by project. Workspaces share a profile and do not isolate cookies or website logins.

Screenshots

Capture a full webpage or a selected area on desktop, then save the image for reference.

Translate

Translate supported page text using the built-in service. Translation requires a connection and may miss context.

Picture-in-picture

Show a supported video in a floating window while reading another page.

Mouse gestures

Assign desktop browser actions to mouse movements. Enable gestures and check their mappings in settings.

Command chains

Create a sequence of desktop commands and trigger it with a configured shortcut or gesture.

Ad blocker

Block requests matched by enabled lists. Results vary by site; exceptions may help when a page breaks.

Examples of everyday browsing

Research tabsTab Stacks

Group the sources for one article into a named Tab Stack, then keep unrelated reading outside that group.

Planning a draftNotes and Calendar

On desktop, keep notes beside a reference page and check upcoming events after setting up Calendar.

Long page titlesVertical tabs

Move the desktop tab bar to one side when longer titles help you distinguish similar documents.

Keyboard navigationShortcuts

Assign a shortcut to a frequently used browser action and check for conflicts with website shortcuts.

Website accessPermissions

Review camera, microphone and location permissions for each website rather than granting them automatically.

Changing browsersCompatibility

Try your usual websites and extensions before moving important work into a different browser.

Sharing bookmarksEncrypted Sync

Enable bookmark sync on each device and keep the account and encryption credentials secure.

Project switchingWorkspaces

Put project tabs in separate desktop Workspaces. They still share the profile and its website logins.

Reading layoutToolbars

Move or remove supported toolbar items to leave more space for the page you are reading.

Desktop and phoneSynced tabs

Find a supported synced tab on another device after both browsers connect to the same Sync account.

Many open pagesTab organization

Use groups to find related pages; close or hibernate unused desktop tabs when memory use becomes a concern.

Checking emailDesktop Mail

Connect a supported mail account on desktop and read messages alongside your browsing tasks.

Reducing trackingBlocking settings

Choose a tracker-blocking level and review site exceptions if login or embedded content stops working.

Comparing documentsTab Tiling

Tile two reference pages on desktop and use Notes to record differences without repeatedly switching tabs.

Separate tasksWorkspace groups

Keep shopping and project tabs in different Workspaces. Use profiles when you need separate login data.

Repeated actionsMouse gestures

Configure a gesture for a supported desktop command and practice it on a page without unsaved work.

Personal layoutThemes

Choose a theme and edit the browser layout separately; a theme does not capture every browser setting.

Reading articlesAd blocking

Enable suitable blocking lists, then adjust exceptions when a publisher or page requires them.

Saving referencesCapture

Capture a desktop webpage or selection and save its source address with your research notes.

Routine commandsCommand Chains

Create a short sequence of desktop commands and test it before assigning a shortcut.

Following sourcesFeed Reader

Subscribe to feeds from selected publishers on desktop; available text depends on what each feed supplies.

Set up encrypted sync across devices

Enable Sync on each device, sign in to the same Vivaldi account and configure your encryption credentials. Supported data includes bookmarks, passwords, notes and open-tab information. Sync protects data content with end-to-end encryption; it does not make every device setting identical or replace a separate backup.

Vivaldi on mobile

Vivaldi is available for Android and iOS, with mobile tab controls and built-in content blocking. Configure Sync to access supported browser data on your other devices. Mobile layouts and tools differ from desktop; Mail, Calendar and desktop Workspaces are not part of the same mobile feature set.

Frequently asked questions

Platform differences, sync requirements and extension support.

How is Vivaldi different from other browsers?

Vivaldi combines tab organization with adjustable browser controls. Desktop features include Tab Tiling, Workspaces, Mail and Calendar; mobile versions offer a different selection. Compare the features you need on the platform you use.

How does Vivaldi protect synced data?

Selected data is encrypted before upload and decrypted on your devices using your encryption credentials. The service still processes metadata needed for synchronization. Protect your account and devices, and keep your encryption credentials safe.

Can I sync between desktop and mobile?

Yes, for supported data types. Enable Sync on each device, use the same account and complete encryption setup. Synced tabs can be accessed from another device; this does not automatically reproduce your desktop layout or every setting.

Do I need extensions for built-in features?

Built-in tools do not require separate extensions, though availability varies by platform. Desktop Vivaldi supports Chrome extensions. If you install one, review its permissions, developer and compatibility; desktop extension support should not be assumed on mobile.

Which devices can run Vivaldi?

Vivaldi offers desktop versions for Windows, macOS and Linux, plus Android and iOS apps. Check the current system requirements before choosing a version. An account is needed for Sync, not for ordinary browsing.
