01 Scope of this summary
This page is an informational summary about Vivaldi Technologies AS and its browser services. It does not identify the operator of app-vivaldi.com as Vivaldi Technologies or replace the developer’s service policies.
Vivaldi’s browser policy states that it does not sell personal information and describes disclosure in response to legitimate law enforcement requests with a court order. That statement should not be read as a promise that using the browser involves no data processing.
Local browser storage, optional Sync, crash reporting, search providers and website visits have different data flows. The sections below explain those distinctions; this website’s operational practices require a separate operator disclosure.
02 Data the browser collects
According to Vivaldi’s browser policy, each installation profile receives a unique identifier stored on the device. The browser sends an HTTPS message to Vivaldi’s servers in Iceland every 24 hours containing:
- this user ID;
- the browser version and CPU architecture;
- the screen resolution;
- the time since the last message.
The policy describes truncating the IP address and using a local GeoIP lookup to store an approximate location. Vivaldi states that these messages count active users and their geographic distribution. A persistent installation identifier is still part of the message; this is not a zero-collection model.
03 Browsing history and passwords
Visited URLs, search history and download records are stored in the browser profile on your device. Local storage does not mean the device is inaccessible to other people or software. Enabling history Sync or search suggestions creates separate data flows described below.
The password manager saves credentials when you choose to save a login. It uses the operating system’s password storage framework, with encryption where supported. Protect your device account and review exported password files separately; a readable export is not protected by the browser’s local storage.
04 Sync service
Sync is optional and requires an account and encryption setup. You choose supported data types, which can include bookmarks, settings, passwords and history. Sync transfers browser data between devices; it is not a backup of downloaded files or website content.
The Sync policy describes individually encrypted entries uploaded to Vivaldi servers at Hringdu data centers in Iceland. Your browser decrypts those entries using your key. Protect the encryption password or recovery key and each signed-in device.
The service also stores operational metadata, including the account associated with entries, entry types, creation and modification times, deletion markers and connection times. Server error logs may include a username and timestamp and are retained for up to 30 days. Encrypted content does not mean all service metadata is encrypted in the same way.
The published Sync policy states that data is retained for up to one year after the last interaction with the service, or until deletion is requested. Deletions can propagate through Sync, so keep a separate copy of information you need to preserve.
05 Crash reports
Automatic crash log sharing is a setting you can choose to enable. When enabled, a browser crash can send a detailed diagnostic log to Vivaldi. Check the setting before submitting sensitive browsing data through diagnostics.
Crash logs may include sensitive memory contents, such as passwords or fragments of visited pages. Vivaldi states that it processes incoming logs automatically, removes the full log after processing, and retains a stack trace and the active page URL for 60 days. The retained URL may itself reveal sensitive information.
06 Bundled bookmarks and Direct Match
Some default bookmarks link to Vivaldi’s commercial partners, which can contribute revenue when used. Visiting a partner site is subject to that site’s cookies and privacy terms. You can remove default bookmarks without disabling normal browsing.
For Direct Match availability, Vivaldi describes a country lookup using a local GeoIP database when the feature is used, followed by immediate disposal of the IP address. Opening a sponsored destination is a separate website visit with its own data handling.
07 Third-party services
Browser features can contact external providers. Review the feature setting and the provider’s policy rather than assuming the browser’s privacy statements cover every service:
- Search suggestions: When turned on, the browser sends the keywords you type to the search engine you've chosen, in order to display suggestions. Which search engines are included by default depends on your language settings.
- Safe Browsing: On desktop and Android, Vivaldi integrates Google's Safe Browsing API, which checks sites against a list of known phishing and malware sites. On desktop, it can be turned off in the privacy settings.
- Form autofill: Vivaldi uses Google's form autofill feature, which is on by default and can be turned off in the desktop browser's settings. It does not send your personal information to Google.
- Cookies: The browser stores cookies according to your privacy settings, but how a cookie is used is determined by the website you visit. You can view, manage and delete all cookies in the privacy settings.
- Gmail and Google Calendar: If you connect these accounts in Vivaldi Mail or Calendar, Vivaldi's use of information received from Google APIs will adhere to the Google API Services User Data Policy, including the Limited Use requirements.
- Proton VPN: The desktop integration routes Vivaldi web traffic through Proton’s proxy. Proton’s terms apply; first-use Vivaldi sign-in authorization includes recovery email sharing. It does not cover other apps or Vivaldi Mail.

08 Website data and operator disclosures
Website analytics are separate from browser installation statistics. Vivaldi’s own website policies should not be applied automatically to app-vivaldi.com. This page does not establish whether this site uses Matomo or another analytics service.
When a site uses cookies or other storage, its operator should explain their purposes and available controls. You can manage site data in Vivaldi, but removing it may sign you out or reset site preferences.
Hosting and content delivery providers may process connection information while serving pages or files. This site’s actual providers, retention periods and processing locations are not established by the browser and Sync policies summarized here.
09 Data access and transfer
Vivaldi’s Sync policy describes restricted access for a limited number of employees and hosting providers. Access to encrypted entries and operational metadata differs from the ability to decrypt their contents.
The developer’s policies describe legal disclosure conditions and service-specific processing. They do not establish this website operator’s access arrangements or international transfers; those require a disclosure based on the site’s actual operations.
10 Privacy controls and requests
- Normal web browsing does not require a Vivaldi account. Sync and some other services require separate sign-in or setup.
- Review automatic crash log sharing in Settings and decide whether to enable it.
- You can remove bundled bookmarks and review search suggestions, autofill and desktop Safe Browsing settings. Disabling safety checks reduces protection against known malicious sites.
- Manage cookies and clear browsing data in the browser settings. Clearing local data is different from asking a website or service to delete its records.
- Use the Sync controls to manage server data and consult the service policy for deletion requests.
For requests about data controlled by Vivaldi Technologies, the supplied privacy contact is [email protected]. Requests about this website must be directed to its operator; the developer’s contact should not be assumed to manage app-vivaldi.com data.
11 Summary and policy dates
The review date above refers to this summary. It is not the effective date of Vivaldi’s policies: the browser policy lists December 15, 2023, and the Sync policy lists July 13, 2018. Consult the applicable provider’s current policy before relying on a retention or disclosure statement.
