Compare browsers by how you work

Compare Vivaldi with Chrome, Firefox, Edge, Safari and Opera by workflow. The tables retain an earlier feature snapshot; the notes explain why those ratings should not be read as current support claims.

  • ChromeChrome
  • FirefoxFirefox
  • EdgeEdge
  • SafariSafari
  • OperaOpera

Read the tables as a historical snapshot

Choose a browser around the sites, devices and tools you actually use. A long feature list does not establish better speed, security or compatibility.

The icon tables below reflect the categories and ratings of Vivaldi’s 2023 comparison, not a new test of current releases. Firefox now has tab groups, Safari supports Mac web apps, and Edge offers split-screen browsing. Check current product documentation before treating any negative rating as a missing feature.

01 · Tab organization

Compare tab organization and desktop tools

These historical ratings distinguish Vivaldi-style controls from other implementations. Similar tools can now exist under different names or with different platform requirements.

Test a workflow, not a feature count

For research, try grouping sources and comparing two pages side by side. Vivaldi offers Tab Stacks and Tab Tiling; Firefox tab groups and Edge split screen provide other ways to organize related pages.

For a dashboard left open all day, compare inactive-tab behavior on your actual device. Edge documents sleeping tabs, so the old hibernation row is not evidence that only Vivaldi can reduce inactive-tab activity.

02 · Privacy controls

Compare privacy settings and data practices

Ad blocking, tracker filtering and encrypted synchronization address different problems. A single icon cannot represent a browser’s complete data practices or your chosen settings.

Separate filtering from data collection

A website can still recognize an account you sign into, even with tracker blocking enabled. A private window mainly limits locally retained session data; it does not make your connection anonymous.

Vivaldi’s browser policy describes installation counting and optional crash reporting. Compare each browser’s current policy, enabled services and Sync setup rather than reading the historical “no tracking” row as a claim of zero data collection.

03 · Tools and customization

Compare built-in tools and customization

Built-in tools can reduce the number of add-ons you manage. Availability differs between desktop and mobile, and an extension can still be useful when you need a particular feature.

Weigh convenience against setup and resource use

For note-taking alongside research, a built-in panel can be convenient. For a specialist workflow, check whether your preferred extension works in the browser and on the platform you intend to use.

Built-in features also consume resources when active. Compare memory and responsiveness with the same tabs, accounts and extensions; this page provides no controlled benchmark proving one browser uses less memory.

What to check before switching

Vivaldi is worth evaluating if you want configurable desktop tab tools and integrated Notes, Mail or Calendar. Those controls take time to learn, and the mobile editions do not include every desktop tool.

Before switching, test an important login, a video call and a work application. Keep the browser and operating system updated, and confirm import and synchronization options for your devices.

FAQ

Frequently asked questions

How to interpret the older ratings and evaluate a browser today.

01

What criteria does this comparison use?

The tables preserve the feature categories and icon ratings from Vivaldi’s 2023 comparison. They are historical references, not current release certifications or speed tests. The surrounding notes identify several later changes; availability still needs checking for your operating system and release.

02

Is Vivaldi as compatible with websites as Chrome?

Vivaldi’s desktop browser uses Chromium, which provides broad compatibility with many sites and Chrome Web Store extensions. That does not guarantee every login, media service or extension will work identically. Test applications that matter to you.

03

Is it hard to switch from another browser?

On desktop, available import options depend on the source browser and data type. Bookmarks, history and passwords may need different import methods. Confirm the imported data before removing your previous browser profile.

04

With so many built-in features, will it slow down?

Performance depends on open pages, background services, enabled tools and your hardware. Mail synchronization and active web panels can do background work. Measure your normal workload rather than assuming built-in tools use no resources.

05

How does Vivaldi protect my privacy?

Vivaldi offers configurable tracker and ad blocking and optional encrypted Sync. Filtering depends on rules and exceptions; Sync requires setup. Its privacy policy also describes limited technical collection, so privacy controls should not be described as zero data collection.
