Vivaldi browser FAQ
42 answers about device options, Sync, privacy controls and browser tools. Desktop instructions are marked where mobile behavior differs.
Download and install
01Does Vivaldi cost anything?
Vivaldi’s desktop and mobile browsers are free to use. Separate services can have paid plans; for example, some Proton VPN options require a subscription.
02Which systems does Vivaldi support?
Vivaldi has desktop editions for Windows, macOS and Linux, plus Android and iOS editions. Current desktop guidance lists Windows 10 or later and macOS 13 or later. Check the chosen release, Linux distribution and processor architecture before downloading.
03Which version should I download?
Use the download page to compare available versions, then confirm the detected choice. On desktop, x64 and ARM64 target different processors; Linux users also need a package format supported by their distribution.
04Can I import bookmarks and passwords from my old browser?
On desktop, import options depend on the source browser and data type. Bookmarks can be imported from an HTML file; passwords may need another method. A password CSV contains readable credentials, so protect and remove temporary copies after use.
05How do updates work after installation?
Updates depend on the platform and installation method. Desktop update settings and Linux package repositories may handle them differently; mobile updates use the app store. A fixed download link does not guarantee that it points to the newest release.
Account and sync
01Do I need an account to use Vivaldi?
No account is required for ordinary browsing. Vivaldi Sync requires a Vivaldi account and encryption setup. The integrated Proton VPN has its own sign-in and service authorization process.
02What data does sync cover?
Sync can transfer bookmarks, saved passwords, history, open-tab information and selected settings. Notes are supported with limits, including no note attachments in desktop Sync. Data types and settings vary by platform; Sync is not a complete browser backup.
03Can anyone else see my synced data?
Sync content is encrypted on your device using credentials that Vivaldi does not receive. That protects it from server-side reading, but an unlocked device or someone with the decryption credentials can still access it. Keep the encryption password or backup key safe.
04Can my phone and tablet use the same data as my desktop?
Yes, for supported data types. Set up Sync on each device with the same account and encryption credentials. Remote tabs are available through Synced Tabs; they do not automatically reproduce the entire desktop window or feature set.
Privacy and security
01Does Vivaldi collect my browsing history?
Browsing history is stored in your local profile and can be included in optional encrypted Sync. Vivaldi’s policy also describes installation-counting data and optional crash reports. Those practices should not be summarized as collecting no data at all.
02Is Vivaldi as compatible with websites as Chrome?
Vivaldi’s desktop browser uses Chromium, which supports many of the same websites and extensions as Chrome. Compatibility is broad, but not guaranteed for every site, media service or add-on. Test applications important to your work.
03Are extensions safe? Do I need many?
Install extensions only when they add something you need. Desktop Vivaldi already includes several tab and privacy tools. Review each extension’s permissions and publisher; broad access can expose page content or browsing activity.
04How do I clear browsing data?
On desktop, use Tools > Delete Browsing Data and select the data types and time range. Removing cookies may sign you out. Private windows limit local session records, but downloaded files and saved bookmarks remain and websites can still observe your activity.
Tabs and workspaces
01How do I create a tab stack?
On desktop, drag a tab onto another to create a stack, or use tab-selection commands. Choose the stacking style in Settings > Tabs. Stacks help group research pages; they do not create separate login sessions. Learn about tab features
02How can I view several tabs at once?
On desktop, select tabs with Ctrl, Command on Mac, or Shift, then use the tiling command in the tab context menu. Comparing a source and a draft side by side is one use; readable tile sizes depend on your screen.
03What's the difference between workspaces and tab stacks?
Tab Stacks group tabs within a tab bar; Workspaces switch between sets of tabs in a window. You can combine them. Workspaces in the same profile share cookies and logins, so use separate profiles when you need separate accounts. Learn about workspaces
04Will lots of open tabs slow things down?
Active pages can consume substantial memory and CPU. Desktop tab hibernation unloads inactive page content to reduce that load, but the browser still uses resources. Reopening a hibernated tab reloads it, so save unfinished work first.
05Can I get back a tab I closed by accident?
On desktop, use the Closed Tabs menu or Ctrl+Shift+T, Command+Shift+T on Mac, to reopen a recently closed tab. This does not guarantee recovery of unsaved form contents or tabs from a discarded private session.
Ad blocking and VPN
01Is ad blocking on by default?
Vivaldi’s product guidance describes ad blocking as off by default and offers three levels during setup. Check your current selection in Settings: No Blocking, Block Trackers, or Block Trackers and Ads. Learn about the ad blocker
02Can I turn off ad blocking for just one site?
Yes. Open the site and use the address-bar shield to select a different blocking level. This creates a site-specific exception. If a form or player fails, test a lower level there instead of changing filtering for every site.
03Is Proton VPN for Vivaldi free?
The integrated Proton VPN offers a free plan, while paid plans add options. Free connections have server-selection limits. It operates as a secure web proxy for Vivaldi web traffic, rather than a VPN for every app on the device. Learn about the free VPN
04How do I turn on the VPN?
In a supported desktop version, open the VPN control and follow the account and authorization steps. When connecting through a Vivaldi account, the service may create or link a Proton account. Review the account information shared during that process.
05Which traffic does the built-in VPN cover?
The integrated secure web proxy covers Vivaldi’s web browsing traffic. It does not cover other applications or Vivaldi Mail connections. Signing into a website can still identify you, even when the site sees a VPN server’s IP address.
Mobile
01Where can I get the mobile version?
Android users can look for Vivaldi in Google Play; iPhone and iPad users can use the App Store. Check the developer name and device requirements before choosing an app. Go to mobile downloads
02Does the mobile version have ad blocking too?
Yes, mobile editions include tracker and ad blocking. Check the selected level and any site exceptions. Blocking depends on enabled rules and does not guarantee removal of every ad.
03Are the mobile and desktop versions the same?
No. Mobile editions share some browser features and supported Sync data, but their interfaces and tools differ. Desktop features such as Mail, Calendar and Workspaces are not all available on mobile; the integrated Proton VPN is documented as a desktop feature.
Customization and appearance
01How do I change themes and colors?
On desktop, open Settings > Themes to select or edit a theme. Colors, images and theme scheduling can change the browser interface; a theme does not necessarily change a website’s own colors.
02Can the tab bar go on the side or at the bottom?
On desktop, Settings > Tabs lets you place the tab bar at the top, bottom, left or right. Vertical tabs can make long titles easier to scan, but use some horizontal space beside the page.
03Can I rearrange the toolbar buttons?
On desktop, use the toolbar context menu to open the toolbar editor. Add, remove or reposition supported controls. Available buttons depend on the toolbar and browser version.
04Can I customize keyboard shortcuts and mouse gestures?
On desktop, use Settings > Keyboard and Settings > Mouse to configure supported shortcuts and gestures. Avoid assigning a shortcut that conflicts with your operating system or a web application you use frequently.
Built-in tools
01Does Vivaldi have mail and a calendar?
Desktop Vivaldi includes Mail, Calendar and a feed reader. Mail needs an email account and compatible provider settings; Calendar can use local or supported online calendars. These are not the same as getting a new hosted email account.
02How do I use notes?
On desktop, open the Notes panel to write a note or save selected page text with its source URL. To transfer supported notes to another device, enable Notes in Sync; signing in alone is not sufficient, and attachments have Sync limits.
03How do I translate pages and take screenshots?
On desktop, use the translation control for supported languages and pages, or the selection-translation tools. Capture can save a page or selected area. Dynamic content and embedded elements may not translate or capture exactly as expected.
04Can I keep favorite sites in the side panel?
On desktop, add a site as a Web Panel to view it beside your main page. A task list or chat service can be convenient there. Some sites do not work well in a narrow panel, and active panels can use network and processor resources.
Settings and troubleshooting
01How do I make Vivaldi my default browser?
On desktop, look for the default-browser option in Settings > General, then confirm in your operating system. Managed devices may restrict this choice; mobile default-browser steps depend on the platform.
02What if a page won't load or looks wrong?
Check your connection and whether the site works elsewhere. Then test the site’s blocking exception and disable extensions one at a time. Clearing cookies may sign you out, so try that after less disruptive checks rather than assuming every problem is a cache issue.
03Can I undo settings I've messed up?
Some desktop settings sections provide a reset option. Read its scope before confirming, and note any custom values you want to keep. Resetting settings, deleting a profile and removing browsing data are different actions.
04How do I uninstall Vivaldi?
Use the operating system or package manager’s uninstall method. Export important data and keep any needed profile backup first. Sync is not a backup service, and uninstalling the browser does not by itself delete a Vivaldi account or its service data.
About Vivaldi
01Which company makes Vivaldi?
Vivaldi Technologies develops the browser and identifies Norway and Iceland as its bases. This site summarizes the product; the developer’s identity does not establish ownership of this site. Learn about Vivaldi
02How does a free browser make money?
Vivaldi lists search partnerships, bookmark partnerships, Direct Match agreements and donations as funding sources. These describe the browser developer’s business model, not this site’s commercial relationships.
03Is Vivaldi open source?
Vivaldi includes open-source components such as Chromium, but the complete browser is not distributed under an open-source license. Access to some source code is different from permission to modify and redistribute the whole product.
04How do I report a problem or make a suggestion?
Use community discussions for general questions, the developer’s bug form for reproducible defects, and feature-request categories for suggestions. Include your version and clear steps, and remove private information from screenshots. Help and contact
