Browser design

Why Vivaldi puts more controls in the browser

Vivaldi emphasizes configurable browsing: you can group research tabs, compare pages side by side and adjust keyboard shortcuts to fit repeated tasks.

Desktop tools include Notes, Mail and Calendar alongside tab management. Their usefulness depends on your workflow, and the mobile editions do not offer every desktop feature.

Keep control of how you browse.

You can start with ordinary browsing and enable additional tools later. More settings bring flexibility, but also take time to configure and learn.

What the design choices mean in use

Tab organization, interface settings and privacy controls address different parts of everyday browsing.

  • Powerful

On desktop, Tab Stacks group related pages, Tab Tiling displays them together, and Workspaces separate sets of tabs. Workspaces share cookies and logins within the same browser profile.

  • Personal

Desktop themes, toolbars and shortcuts can be changed for your workflow. For example, you can place tabs vertically or assign a shortcut to an action you use often.

  • Private

Tracker blocking and optional encrypted Sync serve different purposes. Blocking relies on rule lists; Sync requires setup. Neither makes activity on websites anonymous.

  • User control

Vivaldi describes a design approach centered on people choosing what to explore. Its company page says it does not include an AI assistant that browses and filters the web for users.

Company background

A team based in Norway and Iceland

Vivaldi identifies Norway and Iceland as its bases. A company location alone does not determine what a website, search provider or connected service collects.

As checked on 11 October 2026, its company page reports 25 nationalities across seven countries. These figures describe Vivaldi Technologies, rather than the team operating this site.

Business model

How Vivaldi funds a free browser

Vivaldi lists four funding sources: search partnerships, bookmark partnerships, Direct Match agreements and donations. The company also reports no external investors. These statements describe the browser developer, not this site's funding or commercial relationships.

  • Search engine partners

Search partnerships help fund browser development. Users can change the default provider; searches sent to that provider are subject to its own privacy terms.

  • Bookmark partners

Some preinstalled bookmarks are commercial partnerships. Users can remove them. Visiting a bookmarked website still involves that website's cookies and data practices.

  • Direct Match partners

Direct Match is another source of partner revenue. The browser privacy policy describes a country lookup when it is used, with the IP address discarded afterward.

  • Donations

Voluntary donations are listed as a funding source. They are separate from downloading and using the browser, which does not require a donation.

FAQ

Frequently asked questions

Company ownership, funding and browser privacy explained.

01

Where is Vivaldi based?

Vivaldi names Norway and Iceland as its company bases and describes an international team. Those locations do not mean that every service accessed through the browser stores data there.

02

Does Vivaldi have outside investors?

Vivaldi reports that it has no external investors. It still has commercial partnerships to fund development; investor independence does not mean the browser has no revenue model.

03

Does Vivaldi collect any browser data?

Yes, its browser privacy policy describes limited collection for counting active installations, including an installation ID and technical details. This differs from recording browsing history for advertising profiles. Optional crash reporting and connected services have additional data rules. Privacy FAQ
